Gift Giving

When we think of Santa Claus and gifts we think of Christmas and gifts under the tree or in stockings hung by the fire. What an awesome, peaceful, and wondrous vision. But Saint Nick’s first tale of nighttime gifts was the story of the Widower with three daughters an no dowry to be able to get them married. As the story goes he crept by their window and dropped in a small sack of gold. Allowing the man to pay a dowry for his oldest daughter to be married. Then he followed that up with two more visits for the younger daughters. St Nick gave away a family fortune to the needy and poor. The examples of his generosity grew legendary all thru the years even new legends today.

Jesus said “You will always have the poor with you” John 12:8 & Mathew 26:11. I think it was to remind us we always need to be charitable. He was quoting Deuteronomy 15:11 “The needy will never be lacking in the land;” which continues on to say; “that is why I command you to open your hand to your poor and needy kinsman in your country”

There are many ways to be poor and needy, economically, spiritually, and maybe just a need to be loved.
