Well there are many theories for Christmas in July. One is that it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere and places like Australia and New Zealand have been celebrating Christmas for years in July. Or maybe 1892 French Opera Werther, that mentions Christmas songs in July. Or the 1940 Hollywood movie Christmas in July written and directed by Preston Sturges. Or my favorite, in 1942, the Calvary Baptist church in Washington DC celebrated Christmas in July with carols and the sermon “Christmas Presents in July”. Which became an annual event to raise donations for Christmas presents to be able to give ample time to deliver to missions worldwide.
But today the most common reason for Christmas in July is just an excuse for a mid summer party with all the wonders of Christmas added in for a bonus. But for many it is just the hunger for “Peace on Earth and good will to men”. The desire for all the good feelings and spirit that Christmas brings to this world. And in this tumultuous time of Covid-19, economic hardship, civil unrest, and rioting we could use a heavy dose of Christmas Spirit.
Please let the spirit of Christmas enter your heart
